2023 Scholarship Recipients
The Nantucket Shellfish Association is proud to announce that we have awarded $18,000 in scholarships this year!! The Nantucket Shellfish Association awards up to two scholarships annually to Nantucket High School alumna who are pursuing studies in the marine sciences.
This year, however, we nearly doubled our commitment of scholarship funding to support three exceptional Nantucketers pursuing higher education. Our 2023 scholarship recipients are Sierra Gray, Alex Freeman, and Skye Flegg.
Sierra Gray
Sierra is pursuing a Masters in Biology from the University of Victoria. Her graduate thesis topic is Juvenile Pacific oysters in a changing ocean: teasing out the impacts of co-occurring climate stressors and the potential benefits of climate bio-mitigation (IMTA).
She also holds a BSc in Marine Biology from the University of Rhode Island with undergraduate research in coral ecophysiology and genomics with a submitted publication in review.
Sierra was a three-time recipient of our scholarship for her undergraduate studies and we are delighted to continue supporting her commitment to marine sciences with scholarship support for her graduate studies again this year! Congratulations Sierra!
Alex Freeman
Alex is a rising junior at the University of New Hampshire. He is pursuing a major in Business Administration and Economics with a minor in Marine Policy.
Alex has been working on Simon Edwardes’ oyster farm for the last six summers. His goal is to pursue a career in coastal/ocean policy as it relates to both the environment and the economic factors of fisheries. Congratulations Alex!
Skye Flegg
Skye is a rising senior at University of New Hampshire. She is pursuing a BS in Biology with an Environmental Conservation and Sustainability minor with a focus on coastal and marine environments.
Skye has worked as a Seasonal Water Quality Technician at Nantucket Natural Resources Dept, worked as an undergraduate research assistant working with a PhD candidate on green crab research in Great Bay Estuary, and most recently studied abroad in New Zealand studying the Ecology and Biogeography of New Zealand (including marine reserve surveys, shellfish surveys, water quality testing, research on diadromous fish and fish passages, etc.). Congratulations Skye!
